Easter Seals Joliet Region, Inc. Autism/ASD Network Services
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is the fastest growing developmental disability in the world today and typically appears during the first three years of life. There are currently 1.5 million people living in the United States alone who have been diagnosed with ASD. Autism Spectrum Disorder includes a variety of conditions that are characterized by severe and pervasive impairment in several areas of development. Individuals with ASD demonstrate deficits in interactive ability, specifically in sensory processing and management of their own behaviors and social interactions. With early diagnosis and treatment, outcomes for children with ASD are greatly improved. The occurrence of ASD is on the rise; the Center for Disease Control (CDC) reports that 1 in 145 children will be diagnosed with ASD, and the rate of occurrence has been cited as high as 1 in every 88 boys. The condition called "autism" is part of a set of closely related conditions and falls under the broad diagnostic umbrella of "Pervasive Developmental Disorders". These conditions include Autistic Disorder, Rett’s Disorder, Childhood Disintegrative Disorder, Asperger’s Disorder and Pervasive Developmental Disorder Not Otherwise Specified. There are an estimated 26,000 children with ASD in Illinois.
